Totally Under Local Anesthesia

Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body's contour by removing excess fat from fatty deposits located between the skin and muscle. Literally, body sculpting by liposuction is a dream comes true. Localized accumulation of excess fat in both men and women, which are often inherited and frequently prove impossible to eliminate by exercise or dieting, can now be removed permanently by liposuction surgery.
In the early 1980s, safe and effective liposuction technique was developed to remove undesired fat from nearly all body areas, including the face, neck, chin, breast, back, arms, abdomen, hips, flanks (love handles), inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees and ankles. Liposuction also emerged as an effective treatment for many non-cosmetic fat accumulations, such as lipomas (benign fatty tumors), gynecomastia (fatty male breasts), and to decrease sweating under the arms.

TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION, completely revolutionized the procedure. It permits liposuction totally by local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. The procedure involves injecting large volumes of a solution directly into areas of excessive fatty deposits. The diluted solution usually contains a local anesthetic and adrenalin to shrink capillaries and prevent blood loss. Tiny incisions are made in the skin and a small stainless steel tube, cannula, connected to a vacuum is inserted by the surgeon into the fatty layer. Using to and fro movements, the fat is extracted through the tube into a collection system. The result is resculpting and smoothing of bulging areas into more attractive contours.

Based on the use of local anesthesia, Tumescent Liposuction is now considered the safest form of liposuction. Not only has the Tumescent Technique proven to be safer than the standard technique using general anesthesia, but it also has proven to have the following
advantages:

Performed in the privacy of our office omitting the need for hospitalization
Less painful with relatively little discomfort
Has minimized post operative recovery time
Decreased bruising with virtually no blood loss
Decreased risk of infection
Better and smoother results
Less visible or no scars
Immediate post operative recovery and Quick return to normal activities
Risk of General anesthesia is eliminated
Has produced optimal cosmetic results

Potential complications from general anesthesia in a hospital setting can be avoided by the use of local anesthesia via the tumescent technique. Since the patient is awake, he or she is able to sit or stand during the procedure, allowing the surgeon to check the progress of the contouring. In addition, a costly hospital stay is not necessary.

Liposuction is not intended to be an alternative to weight loss. The ideal candidate for liposuction is a patient who is healthy, has realistic expectations, and has a specific area of excess fat that cannot seem to disappear despite diet and exercise. People with significant heart, lung, kidney disease or have hepatitis, HIV, bleeding disorder or allergy to lidocaine are not candidates for liposuction under local anesthesia.

The Tumescent Liposuction Technique was developed in late 1980s by Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein, MD., a Dermatologic Surgeon from California. Dr. Taha introduced Tumescent Liposuction at the Vein & Laser Center following his training with Dr. Jeffery Klein.
